Name: On The Edge of The Dark Sea of Darkness The story is exciting, the characters are charming and very much lovable, and there’s a lot to look forward to with 3 more books in the series. In the end, once the action started up, it didn’t often slow down, the goofy similarities proved easy to accept and get used to, and the light-heartedness of the tone provided a necessary balance to the peril and darkness in the story, especially considering it’s written for kids. I wasn’t super sure how I felt about Peterson’s world at first, so many things were so close to ours, just minor differences that I couldn’t decide if they were charming or annoying (totatoes in your garden? groaches scuttling about in the dark?) I also wasn’t sure about the light-hearted tone of the book, especially since from the beginning, it’s obvious that darker things are afoot. It’s the first book in the series, but it becomes apparent pretty quickly that there’s a lot that happened before the first scene takes place plenty of allusion and foreshadowing. It starts off a little slow, but that’s due to the immense amount of world-building taking place.
